Recently Scientists have found the location of a mysterious source of methane gas on Mars. Methane gas is produced through microbes. NASA’s Curiosity rover may be on its top. They have detected the exact position of the emission point of methane gas on Mars.
Since 2012 scientists from the Curiosity rover are continuously searching the sources of methane. They have tried 6 times to find out the exact location and sources but failed in this mission. Now they have found the mysterious origin of methane gas.
Research Model of California Institute of technology
To find out the unknown sources of methane, the researchers from the California Institute of Technology have worked on it. They split the particles of methane gas and developed a research model. Researchers tracked the direction and wind speed at the time of detection. Then traced the backflow of methane particles to the possible points of emission. They traced the time and possible locations. Researchers concluded the observation and were finally able to triangulate the location of methane gas emission.
The researchers used an instrument called Tunable Laser Spectrometer to detect the blips of methane gas. This instrument is detecting quantities of the particles of gas at less than one-half part per billion (ppb). The quantity could be equal to the pinch of salt dropped in an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The size of methane spikes was about roughly 10 ppb.
Location of methane emission point
According to the sources, the point of active emission to the west and southwest of Curiosity rover on the northwestern crater floor. The researchers stated in an article that it would be a coincidence that we found a landing site for the Curiosity rover. The site is located next to the point of active emission of methane gas. This was about a few dozen miles away from NASA’s Curiosity rover.
Researchers Prospect about life on Mars
The existence of methane sources is proved to be a thrilling prospect to scientists. According to science, all of the methane on earth has a biological origin. This prospect on mars could be a major factor in finding life on the planet.
It is also possible that methane gas is originated from non-biological sources. But according to this concept, this could be a sign of geological activity and the presence of water close to it. Both of the possibilities could be a point to the existence of life on this ostensibly desolate planet.
European Space Agency previously made attempts to cross-check the emission of methane throughout Trace gas Orbiter (TGO). They failed in all the attempts. It is also possible that there is methane in the martian atmosphere or maybe there is no methane in its atmosphere. The life span of methane gas is about 330 years. After completing the time span sunlight may destroy the methane gas particles.
According to the researchers, the curiosity could be parked on the top of a local source. They don’t yet found strong evidence of whether the methane comes from tiny lifeforms or not. Scientists have concluded that whatever produced the methane, could be still producing it today. The probability of life is not so high but also not so little. Researchers easily suggested that mars has methane emissions and has certain origins. The next target of the scientists would be to find that something is producing it.
