Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League, also known as DPL, is scheduled for May 31st to June 25th, in which 12 teams will participate. The group stage was completed successfully. So instead, the dates of fixtures were announced on June 17th. Amidst the environment of healthy competition, an incident came out which is not a good gesture to humanity. On June 13th, the match of Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club and Legends of Rupganj was going on. During the game, something happened that cannot be forgiven. The opponent team’s Sabbir Rahman racially abused Dhanmondi Club’s Elias Sunny, who was on strike, during the game. Sabbir repeatedly abused Sunny by calling him “Kalo,” which means black (referring to his skin color). Sunny ignored this misbehavior towards him and focused on the match. But the thing got worsen as Sabbir wouldn’t stop. Thus Sunny approached him, and the umpires had to come between those two. Dhanmondi Club won the game, and Sabbir ignored this issue. But Sabbir was not done yet. On June 16th, when the Dhanmoondi Club was fielding in a match, Rupjung’s bus arrived near the BKSP 3 ground. Sabbir once again started calling Sunny “Kalo.” At first, he ignored, but soon afterward, Sabbir threw a stone towards him right on the ground. It was such a non-sportsmanship attitude of Sabbir to do so. However, Sunny followed the protocol and discussed the situation with the umpires. The match was stopped for a moment, and a complaint was immediately filed on Sabbir Rahman.
After the shameful act, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has penalized Dhanmondi Club’s manager Sultan Mahmud for their involvement in the incident on Wednesday. The duo was fined BDT 50,000 after being found guilty of racist abuse. In addition, the club also fined an official complaint against Sabbir Rahman, and serious action will be taken accordingly against him.
