US-China relations are like boom and bust cycles these days. The Biden administration officially declared a new state policy of containment of China. The US intends to do it by competition and not by open confrontation. Whereas China is also stretching its influence to Latin America and the Caribbean.
Trips Of Wendy Sherman
Wendy Sherman is the deputy secretary of the US state department. She has scheduled visits to Japan, South Korea, and Mongolia from 18 to 25th of July. After these visits, Wendy is likely to visit China. US and Chinese officials are planning for it.
Matter Of Concern
Both superpowers are trying to have superior displays in proposed meetings. Earlier Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin failed to contact Xu Quliang, the second-highest army man after Xi Jinping. It is also expected that if Wendy succeeds in this visit, a meeting of Biden and Xi Jinping can also be arranged.
The Reasons for Wendy’s visit are probably few. They are countering pandemic, climate change, North Korea, economic recovery, and supporting traditional culture in Mongolia.
Core Differences Between US-China Relations
Both superpowers have differences on many core issues like Taiwan, Hong Kong, South China Sea, human rights in Xinjiang, and technology. Both parties look cooperative on some issues like climate change, Iran, and North Korea.
Wendy Sherman wants to meet with officials closer to President Xi Jinping. Whereas China is reluctant to show any leniency over showing the strength of positioning in meetups. Negotiations can be more difficult due to recent sanctions of China on US assets in Hong Kong.
There must be some restarting of dialogues between both countries. People of both countries want peace and stability in their lives. 98-year-old top US intellectual Henry Kissinger also propagated engagement.
